Eligibility Criteria for UPSC CDS I / II Examination 2026
Here’s the thing — the eligibility part is almost always the trickiest, but the rules are pretty well-defined.
1. Nationality
The applicant must be unmarried and fit into one of the following:
A Citizen of India,
A subject of Nepal,
A person of Indian origin who migrated from countries like Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, or from East African nations (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia) or Vietnam with the intention of settling permanently in India.
A small detail:
Those in categories (ii) and (iii) need a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India.
Exception: Gorkha subjects of Nepal don’t need this certificate.
2. Age Limits, Sex & Marital Status

Eligible if unmarried, issueless widow (not remarried), or issueless divorcee with valid documents (not remarried)

3. Educational Qualification
Each academy has its own academic requirement:
IMA & OTA
A Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised university.
Indian Naval Academy
A Degree in Engineering from a recognised University/Institution.
Air Force Academy
A Degree with Physics & Mathematics at 10+2 level, OR
A Bachelor of Engineering
